Ward Profile: Ward 2
For the last two weeks we’ve been covering Ward 12 and its alderman. Catch up by reading Ward 12 – Part 1 and Ward 12 – Part 2.
This week, we’re focusing on Ward 2 and Alderman Gord Lowe.
Ward 2 is the most northwesterly ward in Calgary. It includes the existing communities Arbour Lake, Citadel, Hamptons, Hawkwood, Ranchlands and Royal Oak; and the new communities Nolan Hill, Sage Hill, Sherwood, Kincora and Evanston. Alderman Gord Lowe has been serving Ward 2 since 2001.

Gord Lowe has lived in Northwest Calgary since 1977. He has a background in finance but has also long been interested in law enforcement, which is reflected in many of his activities as an Alderman. He often works towards increasing police and firefighter services in his ward and the city in general.
Gord continues to serve his ward by increasing accessibility to Calgary Transit. He is currently focusing on the extension of the LRT to the Rocky Ridge/Royal Oak/Tuscany area and improving community bus services.
Always involved in his community, Gord has volunteered on numerous occasions. He was also a member of the Calgary Transportation Authority, the Calgary Police Commission, the Alberta Law Enforcement Review Board, the Social Care Facilities Review Committee and the Chair of the Calgary Sub-division and Development Appeal Board.

Ward Details
In terms of population, Ward 2 is the second smallest in the city, however it recently experienced the third highest growth of any ward. Ward 2 accounted for over 12% of Calgary’s growth in 2011. The communities of Evanston, Kincora and Sherwood grew by over 10%, while Sage Hill’s population doubled.
Ward 2 continues to show strong numbers of immigrants from Asian countries. In 2006, over 20% of immigrants to Ward 2 claimed China as their country of birth, with another 29% claiming countries like South Korea, Pakistan and India as their countries of birth.

Ward 2 has the second lowest number of people who drive to work alone, and understandably so. With the Northwest LRT running to nearby Crowfoot and soon out to Tuscany, Ward 2 is well served by Calgary Transit.
Ward 2 has an 88% home ownership rate, the second highest in the city next to Ward 12.
